Mental Health Awareness Week 2020

As a follow up to Mental Health Awareness Week, TR Group is emphasising that it’s more important than ever to check in on your mates and loved ones. From the 21st to the 27th of September, TR Group ran a promotional campaign supporting Mental Health Awareness Week showcasing the messages that emblazon our beloved Mack, the Hopeful Black Dog.

Mack is a stand-out, one of a kind truck and trailer; not only built to work but also built to deliver a powerful message of hope. Mack was put on the road in partnership with I AM HOPE; the youth and community-focused support group started and led by former New Zealander of the Year, Mike King. The messages all around Mack remind us to check in on our mates and loved ones, reinforce that it’s ok to ask for help and most importantly to give an expression of love and support to anyone out there who may be carrying a heavy load.

We have also had the chance to catch up and speak to Bumper, Mack’s driver: “Mack, the Hopeful Black Dog has been driving attention to itself since I started driving it. A lot of people take photos of the truck and I think it’s a really good way to spread the message of hope and encourage people to ask their mates if they’re ok.”

Not only is Mack turning heads out on New Zealand roads spreading the message of I AM HOPE he is also the star of his very own children’s book!

Mike King, together with Tommy Wilson, created the book called “TR & Mack The Hopeful Black Dog”. King says, “By writing this book, we are hoping to change the way the world deals with bullies. Our current strategy is reactive by dealing with the behaviour, rather than proactive by asking ‘what drives the behaviour?’ Why do bullies bully? Bullying is a learned behaviour and behind every little bully in school there is almost always a bigger bully in that kid’s life showing them that this is what love looks like. In this book we don't humiliate, punish, or exclude the bullies. Instead, we show them love, compassion, and understanding and empower them to recognise that their behaviour is not love. We truly believe that once you show a confused kid what true love really looks like; they will be empowered to change. So, let's stop throwing hate at the problem and start throwing love at the solution after alleverybody deserves to be loved. Even the bully.”

TR Group whole heartedly supports this message and we encourage you to purchase this book as part of I AM HOPE’s Gumboot Friday fundraiser. All profits will help The Key to Life Charitable Trust keep its lights on and provide as many free counselling sessions as possible for our young people here in Aotearoa. More than ever we need organisations that focus on the mental health and well-being of our kids.

Get your kids, staff, and everybody you know to read this exciting ‘Kiwi’ approach to mental health and promote spreading truckloads of aroha and kindness!
