TR Group Showcases Hydrogen Truck to Energy Minister as Government Backs Cleaner Freight Future
TR Group was proud to host Energy Minister Hon. Simon Watts this week for a ride in our Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) 6x4 tractor unit and semi-trailer — the first of 20 zero-emission trucks set to hit New Zealand roads. Built by local innovator Global Bus Ventures, the vehicle is a key part of TR Group’s push to decarbonise the freight sector and aligns closely with new government initiatives announced this month.
The ride, which began on the steps of the Beehive and concluded at the H₂ 2 ZERO Hydrogen Summit 2025, was timed with Minister Watts’ opening address — and highlighted the momentum gathering around hydrogen-powered heavy transport.
This milestone comes as the Government announces new measures to support the uptake of low-emission heavy vehicles. As reported in two recent articles —
- Driving a Cleaner, More Competitive Future for Road Freight (Beehive.govt.nz)
- Energy Minister Tweaks Subsidies to Encourage More Hydrogen-Powered Trucks (The Post)
— the Government has increased funding to the Low Emissions Transport Fund, supporting the purchase of hydrogen and battery-electric trucks through EECA.
TR Group’s new hydrogen truck — retrofitted from a DAF CF 530 — features two 85kW Toyota fuel cells, a 124kWh battery, and onboard storage for 52kg of hydrogen, offering a range of up to 500km. Designed to operate seamlessly within current fleet operations, it’s a zero-emission vehicle that doesn’t compromise on performance or usability.
“This is what real progress looks like,” said Brendan King, TR Group General Manager. “This truck drives, loads, and fuels like a diesel – but without the emissions. And with EECA support and local innovation from GBV, we’re making it easier for operators to make the shift.”
The broader rollout will include 20 hydrogen-powered trucks: four Hyundai Xcient rigid FCEVs and 16 GBV-built 6x4 tractor units, all made available through fully maintained operating leases.
TR Group, with over 10,000 heavy vehicles across Australasia, remains committed to helping the transport industry transition to more sustainable, future-ready solutions.
The future of heavy transport is clean, capable, and closer than ever.
