Driving Down Emissions:
One Mudguard at a Time

TR Group partners with RHINO to help decarbonise the transport industry through verified recycled innovation.

When it comes to reducing emissions, even the smallest components can make a big difference. That’s why TR Group is proud to partner with RHINO — the first known manufacturer of heavy-truck and trailer mudguards to achieve an independently verified carbon footprint.

RHINO’s flagship black recycled-plastic guard has been verified by Toitū Envirocare under ISO 14067:2018, confirming a 76% lower carbon footprint compared with guards made from virgin plastic. It’s a milestone that demonstrates how innovation, collaboration, and shared sustainability goals can drive meaningful change across the transport industry.

Collaboration for real impact

RHINO’s achievement is the result of five years of research, development, and industry collaboration — with partners including Fonterra, Mainfreight, TWL, Vision Plastics, and TR Group.

TR Group was the first fleet operator to specify recycled mudguards across its trucks and trailers back in 2021, helping to kickstart a broader shift toward recycled components and circular systems.
Through partnerships like this, TR Group continues to support suppliers and manufacturers who are serious about reducing carbon emissions and delivering verified results.

“We specified recycled guards across our fleet in 2021, and will continue to push our people and our suppliers to innovate to make a difference,” says Shane O’Grady, TR Group National Sales Manager. “It’s one part of our leadership in environmental sustainability and decarbonisation.”

From waste to value

The recycling ecosystem now extends across multiple partners. Fonterra, TR Group, and TWL are all contributing by returning used mudguards for recycling — closing the loop and reducing waste. RHINO’s recycled guards not only meet the same performance standards as traditional products but also include UV additives to withstand harsh conditions.

By combining proven durability with verified carbon data, the partnership is setting a new standard for transparency and performance in heavy transport manufacturing.

Leading the way in sustainable transport

For TR Group, the initiative is another example of how collaboration drives real progress toward a low-emission future. From trialling dual-fuel and electric vehicles to supporting verified recycling systems and ESG-focused partnerships, TR Group remains committed to helping customers and suppliers take practical steps toward decarbonisation.

“Every small improvement adds up. When you’re managing thousands of vehicles, a 76% carbon reduction on a single component quickly becomes a big impact,” Shane O’Grady adds.
